About The Indonesian College of Surgeon
Surgical education in Indonesia began with the arrival of the first surgical specialist from the Netherlands in 1889, Dr. CH Stratz, followed by Dr. JA Koch, P Koefoed, HFP Maaslans, PH Schoonzeid, and HC Van den Vrijhoef in 1894. This was continued in 1915 by Dr. R. Lesk and Dr. Wieberdink, who began teaching at STOVIA, reaching its peak in 1932 when Dr. T. Reddingius was appointed as the first professor of surgery in Indonesia.
On April 19, 1941, the Dutch East Indies Association for Surgery (Nederlandsch Indische Vereeniging voor Heelkunde) was established in Bandung.
In 1942, specialized surgical training began through internships in Batavia and Surabaya (under Dutch surgeons). During the independence era, in 1945, specialized surgical training by Indonesian educators began in Jakarta under the leadership of Dr. Sutan Asin, in Semarang under Dr. Margono Soekaryo, and in Surabaya under Dr. M. Soetoyo.
In 1954, the association of specialist of surgery was formed under the name Indonesian Association of Surgeons (PABI), with Prof. Dr. Margono Soekaryo as its first chairman, officially established at the IDI Congress in 1955 in Semarang. In 1967, the association changed its name to the Indonesian Association of Surgeons (IKABI) at the First National Congress of IKABI in Semarang.
Following the amendment of IKABI's Articles of Association at the IKABI Congress (MABI XIV) in 2002 in Denpasar, Bali, in line with the division of IKABI into 10 Surgical Professional Organizations (OPLB), where seven OPLBs became direct members of the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) as professional associations, three OPLBs—IKABDI, PERABOI, and PESBEVI, were not registered with the MPPK-IDI and remained affiliated with the IDI through IKABI. As a result, each association formed its own collegium structurally.
The Indonesian College of Surgeon (KIBI) initially only oversaw the education of general surgery specialists. In accordance with Law No. 29 of 2004 on medical practice, the subspecialty colleges—the Indonesian College of Digestive Surgeon (KIBDI), the Indonesian College of Oncological Surgery, and the Indonesian College of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery—are under the umbrella of the Indonesian College of Surgeon (KIBI).
With the establishment of PABI in 2002 as an association of general surgery specialists within the scope of IKABI, the position of the Indonesian College of Surgery, which oversees the education and training of students in the general surgery specialist program, became an autonomous body within the scope of PABI. In accordance with Law No. 29, the Indonesian College of Digestive Surgery, the Indonesian College of Surgical Oncology, and the Indonesian College of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery are under the umbrella of KIBI. Since KIBI is under the umbrella of PABI, the representation of the three colleges and professional organizations within the field of general surgery should be under the council overseeing KIBI.
Finally, at the 19th IKABI Congress held on July 12-14, 2012, in Denpasar, Bali, the revised Articles of Association and Bylaws were approved, and the ten OPLBs and Colleges within the IKABI environment must align with the IKABI Articles of Association and Bylaws.
